Spring has sprung, which means it’s time for a bit of spring cleaning – and that goes for your hair and scalp, too!
A quick scalp detox is the perfect way to refresh your scalp and rejuvenate your hair after a cold, dark, and dry winter season.
If you're not familiar with a scalp detox, it's the process of deep-cleaning your scalp to remove product buildup, environmental pollutants and excess oils.
In this blog post, I’m going to go over why performing a scalp detox is so important, how to perform one, and give you some aftercare tips to maintain a healthy, happy scalp!
Why you should detox your scalp
As the seasons change, the weather affects our hair and scalp differently. Switching up our hair care routine can help jumpstart healthy new cell development and hair growth in these new conditions.
A great place to start is a blank canvas, or, a clean, freshly detoxed scalp! A scalp detox can help improve hair growth, reduce dandruff, and increase overall scalp health. This will not only improve the look and health of your scalp (bye-bye dandruff!), but it will also help you grow stronger, longer locks.
Over time, your scalp can get pretty clogged up with:
- hair products like shampoo, conditioner, and styling products
- environmental pollutants like dirt and pollution
- dead skin cells and excess hair oil (sebum)
All of these can lead to hair problems like dryness, itchiness, breakage – and they can even inhibit new hair growth.
This is also why it’s so important to watch for the signs of an unhealthy scalp, and take appropriate action to keep your scalp clean and healthy.
How to perform a scalp detox
Performing a scalp detox is quick, easy and oh-so-refreshing!
Just follow the steps below to rejuvenate your scalp (and hair).
Choose the right products: Look for a scalp detoxifying shampoo or treatment that contains ingredients like tea tree oil, peppermint oil, or caffeine. These ingredients help to remove buildup and soothe the scalp.
Try this all-natural, DIY coffee scalp scrub recipe:
Section your hair: After wetting down your hair, part it into sections to make it easier to apply the scalp detoxifying product directly to your scalp.
Massage the scalp: Using a scalp massager (or your fingers), gently massage the product into your scalp in circular motions. This will help to stimulate blood flow and loosen any buildup. Leave the product on for 5 – 10 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly: Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water to remove all of the product from your scalp and hair. Shampoo and condition as usual.
Aftercare for a clean, nourished scalp
After performing a scalp detox, it's important to nourish and protect your scalp to keep it supple, and healthy while maintaining the perfect canvas to grow healthy new hair!
This is also the perfect time to start training your hair to go longer stretches between washing (more on this topic next month).
Use a gentle shampoo: Avoid harsh shampoos that can strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils. Look for a gentle shampoo that will cleanse your hair without causing irritation. Be careful not to over wash because your scalp will start to produce more oil as it tries to rehydrate itself.
Avoid harsh chemicals: Try to avoid using products with harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and silicones. These can irritate your scalp.
Maintain a healthy diet: Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of vitamins and minerals can help to keep your scalp healthy. And, take your all-natural Growth Complex vitamins and minerals to jumpstart strong, healthy hair.
Use a scalp massager: Use a scalp massager to increase blood flow to your scalp and help to promote new hair growth (plus, it feels like heaven on the scalp!).
Apply hair masks: On the eve of your wash day, apply an argan oil hair mask to rehydrate your scalp and hair. Don’t worry about it looking greasy, as you’ll wash away those oils the very next day.
